Challenging the Brain for Brain Health with Video Games
There's a new demand of the modern age as advances in medical science and the understanding of our bodies and ... brains brings about a new type of fear. Alzheimers. Consider that there is now definitive laboratary test to detect if you have Alzheimer's Disease. There's an increase concern in developing our brains and in keeping it healthy. There are many brain health products being marketed out there including health supplements like coenzyme Q10 and ginseng as well as other 'electronic' devices.
Video games, though regarded by many critics as a waste of time, and by parents as a 'distraction to studies' or an addictive reason to get 'cooped up in home' have been proven to increase visual skills. Also, there are games like Nintendo's Brain Age 2 that provides simple math challenges and brain excercises.
Research has shown that brain cells are formed throughout your life. This led to the Brain Plasticity Movement in that consistently challenging your brain will help it do develop better.
So if watching television is called an idiot box (not much challenge there unless your actively participating in a quiz show), how should we define playing video games that with it's puzzles, quizzes, missions, all active challenges to the brain?
Should more middle age people play video games for better brain health. Or sudoku for the poor?
With a growing demand and more brain health evangelist spreading the message, there is a great business opportunity and something to consider. With Nintendo's Wii increasing even physical interaction besides the mental stimulation, such combinations might prove attractive for those who are really concern with health.
