DayLight Saving Time 2009

Its DST once again starting March 8! So its time to move that clock hand one hour forward. Personally, I like to call Daylight saving time as Summer Time - there is just twist of pleasure whenever I see or hear the word 'summer'.

People usually have the wrong idea that the purpose of daylight saving time is to give them more time to frolic on summer evenings. Well, I wish our forefathers are such consenting adults to let summer loving people to sunbathe under sun.

Nah. The real purpose is to conserve energy. With daylight illuminating your room and place of work, you'll end up using lesser energy. Thank wise Benjamin Franklin for this wonderful idea. Ben's logic dictates that with DST you'll use the lights less and ultimately you'll waste less oil, coal, etc.

Seriously, the real logic on this practice is that on December 21 sunrise is around 7:20 AM and sunset around 4:40 PM--business hours. As the day of the year moves on you get more daylight in both morning and afternoon; but you need it mostly during afternoon. Rather than try and noodge the clock ahead every day, you bide your time till March or April. Then bam, you switch to DST.

So how do we actually observe it?

It depends actually where you are in the world. In the U.S., clocks change at 2:00 a.m. local time. In spring, clocks spring forward from 1:59 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; in fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. In the EU, clocks change at 1:00 a.m. Universal Time. In spring, clocks spring forward from 12:59 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.; in fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.
