Setting-up Home Office for Home-Based Business

With acute rise in unemployment, starting your own home-based business may be your personal solution to counter your jobless status. There are now a number of skills which are being sourced online. If your skills fall into these requirements, it may be time to study the feasibility of a home-based business.

Here are some points that I think you would find useful in analysing whether you can have a profitable venture having an home office for home-based business:

    * The most important key to success for home businesses is having personal discipline. Being home-based naturally raises the concern of having your household concern distract you from your work. If you co-mingle home and business at the same time, you’ll never make any progress. When you are at work in your home business, don’t do anything but focus on your business. No wandering into the kitchen every five minutes for a snack. No TV shows on in the background. No kids to watch. Just focus on your business or work.

    * One of the thing you can do to achieve the first point is to separate your home office from the rest of the house - as much as possible. You don’t want a visitor to your home office to be able to see the dirty dishes in your kitchen sink. Having a separate door to your home office is a good idea as it creates a clear line of separation between your home and your home business. It’s also a good idea to engage a cleaning service for your home business. You’ll be more productive in a clean office and you’ll be ready should any customers need to visit your home office on short notice.

    * Make sure you have the following technical requirements:

  1.     A computer with good specifications.
  2.     A headset.
  3.     A reliable and fast internet connection (broadband) to download/upload big files.
  4.     User accounts at Skype, MSN, YM, and other online messaging programs as may be required by clients

    * Related to the above consideration, you should invest in a quality phone system. Most home business transact 90% or more of their business by phone. It’s worthwhile to spend a little extra money on a professional office phone system to get that extra edge.

    * There would be time where you have to meet with your business contacts. Bringing them home may not be a good idea so consider using local coffee shops for business meetings. Nowadays, they all have fast connections to the Internet, so you can even be online during your meeting in case you need to access some files or a demo online.
