It really sucks whenever a subscriber complains you for spamming. Imagine people agreeing to sign up to your email/newsletter program as subscriber and then complaining you for spamming when they do receive email from you. Unsubscribing is OK; but to complain your email as spam can really blow your head away.

Getting one complaints per 1,000 emails sent does not cause problems. But more than that would be a serious concerns as some ISP may end up filtering your emails. Email marketers certainly dont like the risk of getting your dedicated IP address blocked by one or more ISPs.

The first you need to do if you dont have an automatically unsubscription feature for your email blasting tool is to remove manually those who had unsubscribed or complained you in previous emails.

Other things you need to consider is if you are using an old list, some of your subscribers may have forgotten about you or their email addresses may no longer be valid. There are even some subscribers who just use the complaint ("mark as spam") button when they want to get off of a list because it is more convenient than the unsubscribe link - which is one scenario that makes me ballistic.

Once you have sent your email, check your delivery reports to see if you have poor delivery like having a high soft bounce rate from a particular ISP or a group of recipients. If this is the case, the ISP may be filtering you already. You would have to follow certain procedures to get your IP address unblocked.

Ultimately, it is always safe to place an unsubscribe link at the top of your email. By making your unsubscribe link highly visible, you keep your emails from being blocked from those who really want to receive them - thereby increasing the quality of your email recipients.
