Tips for New Affiliate Managers

I have been in touch with several new affiliate managers and I have been asked again and again to give some tips on affiliate management based on my personal experience. As we all know, Affiliate Marketing is a young but fast growing industry so it is not uncommon that we have related professionals migrating their career to affiliate management. With the growing demand, we should expect more people jumping to our fence.
One of the basic advise to newbies I give is that they should learn to be an affiliate yourself. This way, you can walk in the shoes of your affiliates to find out the inner workings of their business. Essentially, you need to teach yourself HTML and apply it in your web site, blogs, newsletter and email communication. This will also help you in solving usual coding problems or technical issues that your publishers would encounter. Another benefit of having a hands-on being an affiliate is that you will get to learn about other affiliate programs particularly those of your competitors. As you pick up the links from these competitors, you would be able to see how they communicate to their publishers as well as get ideas on the creative they provide.
I have also delved in PPC campaign to get a good idea on how the Search Specialists are doing their craft. As these people are the usual driver for your program, you would be able to communicate more effectively as they would sense that you know what their needs are.
