Reading the Affiliate Terms and Conditions
When signing into an affiliate program, affiliates are presented with the program terms which they should carefully read and understand to its full extent. Though this is a very important piece of information, many publishers are taking it for granted resulting to conflicts as they start to be deprived of their earn commissions due to ignorance of the prohibited type of promotion.
One of the common conflicts is on the use of the Trademarked terms. Many advertisers do not allow their publishers to us their Trademarked/restricted terms in search keywords, ad-copy and display URL or sub domain. These violations had escalated in the past two years that many networks had introduced several control mechanism to avoid these conflicts and to protect the interest of their advertisers.
This is particularly an issue for those in the search or sponsored listing campaigns. It is relatively easy to put up sponsored listing ads and link directly to the merchants sites. No need for content, no need for web site design, all you need to do is just create a great ad copy and you can reap commissions on profitable keywords. Yet, for those who chose to ignore the terms and conditions on Search policies, this could spell financial loss due to invalidated leads or sales.
Another group of publishers affected by this restriction are those in the coupon promotion campaign. Most coupon sites display merchants trademarked name on their display url to feature specific store's coupons and deals. Those who do not take time to read restriction on the use of trademarked terms on display url may end up empty handed despite referring successful transactions.
There are, however, merchants who do not have too many restrictions and are even encouraging affiliates to bid on their trade names. The key is to take time to read the terms and restrictions that each program lays down at the onset of your program participation. A few minutes spent on reading might spell the difference between a rich rewards and a devastating shortfall.
