InPhase Holographic Discs Stores 300GB-1.6TB

There has been talks of holographic storage technology but with no commercial deadline in sight. And so it was a pleasant surprise whenInPhase showcased their Tapestry 300r holographic drive and media at the NAB2008 show in Las Vegas earlier this month.

"Imagine having 50 hours of high definition video on a single disk, 50,000 songs on a postage stamp, or 500,000 x-rays on a credit card. Holographic storage makes it all possible." boasts InPhase on its website.

The first Tapestry 300r has a capacity of 300GB with a transfer rate of 20MB/sec. But soon we'll be seeing Tapestry discs of with up to 1.6 TB and a transfer rate of 120MB/sec.

It comes in a cartridge case to prevent contact with the drive head, eliminating wear on the disc. The disc is made of a high-performance, proprietary material developed by InPhase due to the lack of a suitable recordable material. It took InPhase eight years to develop the disc and various other technologies required.

Tapestry has a lifespan of 50 years, currently the longest of any medium.

Currently, it will only be media professionals who will be using this new tech, with the drive costing $18,000 and discs $180 each. But expect to see it drop when other companies like Plasmon join the holographic storage market.

What about Blu Ray?

Without a doubt, Blu Ray is currently cheaper (and getting cheaper), but its capacity is far from Tapestry. Currently the record stands at 250GB on a 10-layer disc byRitek.

A regular Blu Ray disc holds 25GB-50GB(double layer). And it also doesn't have a life-span (20 years) to match.
